If a rookie quarterback starts his first game in the NFL, he is expected to be nervous and he is expected to make a lot of mistakes. So most people aren't surprised if a rookie quarterback loses the game. But there is a simple formula to secure a win with a rookie quarterback: Run the football!
This week both Atlanta and Baltimore opened the season with a young kid under center and both teams won! Baltimore rushed the ball 46 times for 229 yards and Atlanta got 42 rushing attempts for 318 yards. Those numbers are rare in the NFL. Most teams call only 25-35 running plays in a game. But to win a game with a rookie under center your gameplan has to rely heavily on the running game.
While both teams had a similar approach with the running game, they managed the passing game different. Atlanta's Matt Ryan threw the ball only 13 times (with Michael Turner's performance the Falcons didn't need to go through the air), but mostly deep passes and he passed out of play-actions. Baltimore's Joe Flacco on the other hand threw a lot of short and medium passes to minimize the risk of a turnover. But both teams protected the quarterback well leaving 6 or even 7 guys at the line of scrimmage to pass block.
So the success formula for rookie quarterbacks is simple:
Run heavy + Easy passing + max protection = WIN!
